The Verdict: State Vs. Nanavati Seems To Be ALTBalaji’s Biggest Project Yet!
We know from Bollywood and the likes of web shows all over that there is a greater deal of interest surrounding web shows that are inspired by true events. There are examples like Neerja, Talwar etc which have been fine depictions of true events. ALTBalaji’s latest show, The Verdict: State Vs. Nanavati deals with one of the most controversial legal cases India has ever faced.

The setting is 1959, Bombay, and a shocking crime rocks the city. A Naval officer (Manav Kaul) kills a man, rumoured to be his wife’s lover. The wife’s role is played by Elli Avram. The morality of the crime sparked a lot of debate and in a lot of ways, split India into two polarizing halves. Other cast members of the show include Sumeet Vyas, Saurabh Shukla, Angad Bedi and Kubbra Sait.

The trailer looks very interesting and manages to create the world of 50s Bombay beautifully. Period dramas have earlier been done well by ALTBalaji in their show, Bose: Dead or Alive. Some of the most interesting shows don’t offer clear answers, but instead ask questions and force you to look inward towards your own biases. The Verdict: State Vs. Nanavati seems like a show that would manage to do that. It also seems to offer an insight into Indian politics, the distress faced by women and the Indian judicial system. Plus, who doesn’t love a good courtroom drama?

An earlier Bollywood film, called Rustom starring Akshay Kumar was based on the same case and will definitely invite comparisons. The show has all the elements of a good crime thriller and will be definitely marked by good performances given the cast. This could be the next big Indian show and we can’t wait till it finally hits screens! It is supposed to be out on September 30th.
