Aashram Review: Bobby Deol Starrer MX Original Series About The Ungodly Godman Is Engaging And Will Leave You With Lots To Think About

Bobby Deol Starrer web series Aashram has released on MX Player, and the nine-part season directed by Prakash Jha revolves around the life of the fictional Baba Nirala, played by Bobby Deol. The makers already raised people’s curiosity about this web series after they had decided to release a disclaimer before the trailer to avoid any untoward controversies. Now, Aashram has premiered on MX Player, and this web series that also stars Anupriya Goenka, Aaditi Pohankar, Adhyayan Summan, Darshan Kumaar, Tushar Pandey, Tridha Choudhary, Vikram Kochhar, sheds light on several important social issues such as the caste system, caste politics, and oppression.

Bobby Deol plays the role of Baba Nirala- the charismatic messiah of the common man, who helps those in need and does charitable and good deeds, from the looks of it. The series begins with a wrestling match between a Dalit girl and another girl belonging to the upper caste, and several instances that portray the bias and caste discrimination are shown. A Dalit girl’s family is beaten up by upper caste men for entering their neighbourhood. As the girl approaches the police and registers an FIR, the cops deter her from filing a police complaint. Not left with many choices, the girl turns to Baba Nirala, who is not really a ‘godman’ but a ‘conman’.

Baba Nirala has his own share of dark secrets and is haunted by his own nightmares. A flashback scene shows a girl being stabbed brutally by a few goons of Babaji. Coming back to Baba Nirala’s personality, with a calm and composed exterior, there’s more to him than meets the eye. Politics, shady happenings in the aashram, a close aide who does the dirty work- as the events unfold, we get a glimpse into the underlying depravity.

Bobby Deol does a fair job of portraying the godman, and Aditi Pohankar’s amazing performance as the small-town girl left us impressed. The theme of the series is not something a lot of movies or series have touched upon, which is why it makes for an interesting watch.

Bobby Deol starrer Aashram, is hands down, binge-worthy!
