Antara Mitra: Becoming A Playback Singer Feels Like An Adventure Ride
Playback singer Antara Mitra is on cloud nine these days. And why not? Her Dilwale tracks -- Gerua, Janam Janam and Manma Emotion Jaage -- have already climbed the charts. In an exclusive chat with SpotboyE, the former Indian Idol finalist talks about her Bollywood journey and much more. Excerpts:

Your songs from Dilwale- Gerua and Janam Janam have already become chartbusters. Had you expected them to become such big hits?

I had worked with Rohit sir (Rohit Shetty, Dilwale director) in All The Best. Dilwale is a dream come true. The songs have got more than 2 million views in less than 24 hours. I recorded Gerua at 3 am and everyone loved it. I wanted to redub the song, but others felt there was no need.
Janam Janam (a duet with Arijit Singh) is a more intense romantic number. This track was also recorded in the wee hours, when I was half asleep.

You and Pritam seem to be a good combination. He had given you your first big hit in Raajneeti and now, Dilwale. Do you consider him your mentor?

Pritamda is an institution in himself and I am proud that he is my mentor. I have learnt many things from him, including technicalities. As a composer, his vision is amazing. He is very meticulous about the texture of the song.

Talking about Bheegi Si from Raajneeti, it took you quite some time to register your first hit...
I was singing for films like All The Best, Life Partner and a few others. One day, I got a call from Pritamda's office, asking me to record the scratch of Bheegi Si. I recorded the song and forgot about it, but after a few months, I heard the song in my voice on television.

Tell us about your journey from being an Indian Idol finalist (Season 2) to making it big in Bollywood.
I was 18 when I participated in the show. Before that, I never thought I could become a singer. The inner calling happened when I started clearing rounds at the contest. After that, people started recognising me and I started doing shows.
Coming to Mumbai and becoming a playback singer feels like an adventure ride to me. I am extremely happy with what I have achieved so far.

You inherited your interest in music from your father...
Yes, my father was a music teacher and his students would often come home. But making me sit and learn was a task for my dad, as I would not listen to him. Finally, he got me another teacher. I have learnt Rabindra Sangeet and classical music.
