Bajirao Mastani Lyricist: 'Vaat Lavli' Is Used By All Indians, So What's The Problem?
Prashant Ingole made his debut as a lyricist with the hit number, Party On My Mind (Race 2). After penning 3 songs for Mary Kom, he has now written the popular song Malhari for Bajirao Mastani. The lyricist talks to SpotboyE about the experience of working on a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Excerpts:

Tell us about your songs in Bajirao Mastani.

I have written three songs in the film - Malhari, Fitoori and Gajanana. Ranveer has taken Malhari to a completely new level with his energy.
For Fitoori, Sanjay sir told me that I had to write a lavni song in Hindi, blending the elements of Marathi.
Gajanana is basically an aarti. There are so many Ganesh aartis already, so I tried to make this one different by bringing in different names of Ganeshji and Sanjay sir liked that a lot.

Bhansali is known to be a taskmaster. Did he interfere in your process?
Not really. Sanjay sir and I share a great rapport with each other post Mary Kom. He just makes sure that he pushes you to do your best. Sanjay sir would not reject the songs outright, but would tell me clearly why something was not working for him in a particular song.

You've faced a lot of flak for incorporating 'Vaat Lavli' in Malhari. Your take on it?

We need to understand that films are becoming global and they need to connect with the audience. We do not have to cater to audience from Maharashtra only. 'Vaat Lavli' is a term used by all Indians and is also used in Hindi.

Your songs in Mary Kom received a good response, but didn't bag any nominations. Didn't that bother you?
I think nominations have nothing to do with creativity. I don't believe in Indian awards. But I would like to get a National Award some day. Also if Priyanka Chopra or anyone from the team gets an award, then it means the whole team has won it.

Amongst your contemporaries, who do you consider your competition?

I don't see anyone as competition but I do admire few people here like Javed Akhtar sahab, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Sayeed Quadri sir and Irshad Kamil sir. Their lyrics have soul.

As a lyricist, what do you have to say about songs that have double meaning?
There are times when you are specially asked to write such songs. You have to be very smart and write it subtly so that you fulfil the producer's demand and at the same time, it's not direct.

If you are offered a song with abusive lyrics, would you write it?
I haven't done it till date and I don't think I would do it in the future either.

The music industry has been divided over the issue of royalties. What's your stand on the subject?

Royalty hamara haq hai. Need I say more?
