Himesh Reshammiya: I never question Salman bhai
Juggling the roles of singer, composer and actor, Himesh Reshammiya is constantly trying to up his game. With less than a week to go before the release of Teraa Surroor where he plays the male lead, SpotboyE caught up with him for a freewheeling chat. Excerpts:

You’re back with Teraa Surroor, which is touted to be a sequel to Aap Kaa Surroor…
Teraa Surroor is not exactly the sequel of Aap Kaa Surroor but it is just taking the Surroor brand forward. It’s a thriller shot in Dublin. The film revolves around the love story of Raghu, which is my character and Tara (played by Farah Karimaee) with an element of mystery in it.

Everyone’s talking about your new lean avatar in the film.
It took me a year to build this kind of a body because I wanted to get my abs naturally. I don’t eat after anything 8.30 pm and eat right.

You were panned as an actor with Aap Kaa Surroor and now, you’ve returned with Tera Surroor. Are you trying to prove a point?
I am not trying to prove anything – I am simply trying to improve every aspect of my performance including acting. My performance in my last release The Xpose was appreciated, so with this film, I want to reach the next level. I am just trying to win the hearts of people who have not been on my side.

Was it tough when people had written you off during Aap Kaa Surroor?
I believe that I don’t have anything to complain about. When I started off as a composer, my first song became a blockbuster. I got a break from Salman bhai and now I have more than 600 songs to my credit. I won many awards for my first song as a singer too. My first film as an actor (Aap Kaa Surroor) was a hit – never mind what the critics say.

Has music taken a backseat because of acting?
I just composed for Sanam Teri Kasam – it was a small film but the music did well. I am doing my live shows, singing and composing. But now, I am taking up less work. I’ll compose for 2-3 films a year and do one film as an actor.

You were always known for your chartbusters which were a staple at pubs. Do you miss that adulation?
I feel that now I have to go to the next level. In terms of party numbers, Hukka Bar (Khiladi 786) and Jumme Ki Raat (Kick) are not that old. I composed the title track of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, which became a super hit and had the highest number of dubsmashes. The mashup of Terra Surroor is played across all pubs and Kheech Meri Photo (Sanam Teri Kasam) has done well. I have constantly been delivering hits. Today, I have every kind of song to my credit and that’s essentially what I want from myself.

You have patched up with Salman Khan, after your bitter fallout a few years ago. Many say that his presence in your life again has changed things for you…
Whatever I have achieved is because of God, my parents and Salman Khan. He gave me my first break with Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya and I have done 15-18 projects with him. My success ratio with him is high. I feel blessed to work with him. When it comes to Salman bhai, I do not question him; I just do what he says.
