Popular singer Babul Supriyo has sung some of the biggest hits of the 90s and is quite an accomplished singer in the industry. Some of his most popular songs include ‘Dil Ne Dil Ko Pukaara’ from Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, Hata Sawan Ki Ghata, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, among many others. He is one of the few people in this country to have made a successful transition from the Bollywood industry to politics and do well in both of them. Babul Supriyo is also the voice behind the second song of ‘9XM Indiefest with SpotlampE Originals’- Shayera, and the romantic track will release tomorrow. As we eagerly wait for the song Shayera to release tomorrow, here’s looking at some lesser-known facts about the singer turned politician:

Humble Beginning: Supriyo was born and brought up in a small town called Uttarapara which is on the banks of river Hooghly. He belonged to a musically inclined family and learned all his basics from his grandfather NC Baral who was a composer as well as a vocalist.

Inter-School Champ: During his schooling years, Babul Supriyo won a lot of competitions including ‘All India Don Bosco Music Champion’ (1983) and ‘The Most Enriching Talent’ (1985). He had won multiple inter-school competitions by the time he’d finished his schooling and also performed on Doordarshan and All India Radio.


Banking Job: Graduating from college in 1991, he joined the Standard Chartered Bank and worked there for almost a year, before relocating to Mumbai to try his luck in Bollywood.

Name Change: His first break was given to him by Kalyanji, who chose him to perform in foreign live shows. And as soon as he entered the industry, he changed his name from Babul Supriyo Baral to Babul Supriyo.

Acting Stint: He also starred in a few movies including Mr Joe B. Carvalho (2014).
