With the pandemic showing no signs of disappearing, the movie business has begun to look at the question of theatrical release in a new light. With the two August releases Bell Bottom and Chehre showing Box-Office collections not on par with expectations (though Bell Bottom is said to have fared well, at least keeping the circumstance in mind), filmmakers who were determined to release in theatres are now re-examining their earlier stance.
SS Rajamouli’s RRR, the big-screen explosion which has been postponed several times, recently got a new release date - October 13, 2021. But now it seems completely out of the question that this long-awaited film would actually keep its new date with the audience.
In fact, one member of the film’s team told me that a call has been taken to postpone the film further.
“It’s not releasing on the 13th or anywhere close to it. Almost everyone in the team favours a digital release for RRR except Raja Sir (director SS Rajamouli) who won’t hear of it. But how long can we wait for theatres to re-open?” a source from the RRR team wonders.
In all probability, Rajamouli would just have to give in to the idea of a digital release for RRR. That, sadly, is the new normal.
RRR is produced under the banner of DVV Entertainment and stars Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran and Olivia Morris in pivotal roles. It is a fictitious story set in the 1920s and based on two legendary freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju.
