he country woke up today to the sad news of the three-time National Award-winning actress, Surekha Sikri’s demise. The veteran actress succumbed to a cardiac arrest at the age of 75. In her glorious career, the thespian had made a mark for herself in not just films but also in TV. While she impressed everyone with her performances in Tamas, Mammo, Zubeidaa and Badhaai Ho on the big screen, she also left an impact on the small screen with Saat Phere and Balika Vadhu.

Sikri’s onscreen daughter-in-law from Saat Phere, Rajshree Thakur, remembers the veteran with an emotional heart. “I was just thinking about her and all these thoughts are flooding in. She was a great lady and very disciplined in everything. Her discipline in work was something the whole world knows about, but she was also disciplined in her lifestyle and her eating habits. We were all kids on that set and she would take care of us and even used to guide us on what to eat,” she shares. Rajshree remembers how she blessed her on the set when she came back after an illness. “She wasn’t very talkative but I remember when I had dengue and was hospitalised. I wasn’t at the shoot for almost 15-20 days, and when I resumed shooting, she came up to me in my vanity. She was a hardcore follower of Sai baba and she had got udi for me and told me to keep it and I will be alright. It was two months ago when Rajshree met Surekha ji for the last time. “Two months ago, when the news came of her not keeping well, I went to meet her. She wasn’t able to move but she remembered everything. She used to come for Ganpati at my place every year without fail. She remembered each and everything from the set of Saat Phere, which was 15 years back. She hasn’t seen my daughter but she remembered I have one and she asked about my whereabouts. She was suffering a lot but she didn’t miss these little things. She wasn’t very expressive about her feelings but she had everything,” she insists.  

Ask Rajshree what she learnt from the iconic actress in her lifetime and pat comes the reply, “Dedication towards her work. I remember the last time I met her, she still wanted to work. She wanted to work till her last breath. Her work was beyond our imagination,” she asserts.
