Getting into Shilpa Shinde's shoes is a nice challenge, says Shubhangi Atre
Met the new Angoori Bhabi from Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai who made her entry in the show, last night. Shubhangi Atre replaced Shilpa Shinde in the lead. SpotboyE was the first to break this news about the change (Shilpa Shinde loses Bhabi Ji to frenemy Shubhangi Atre, Apr 16). Excerpts from an interview with Shubhangi:

How did you land the lead role in Bhabi Ji... ?
Actually, I had auditioned for a different show for & TV. I didn't know that I would get a call for Bhabi Ji... instead. Nevertheless, I was very excited. I had read that Shilpa Shinde wanted to quit the show. I thought that getting into her shoes would be a nice challenge, so I took it up. She played a very popular character - Angoori Bhabi, so why not?

And then?
I did a mock shoot and had a couple of meetings with the Bhabi Ji... team. Eventually, I was told on my birthday on April 11 that I was on board. So, you can say that this show has come to me as a birthday gift.

You have a thing with Shilpa, it seems. Last time, you replaced her in Chidiya Ghar. She must be very angry with you...
(Laughs) I don't know if she is angry, she would be the right person to reply to this.

Are you seeing the previous episodes of Shilpa to get your character right on screen?
No, I have seen a few episodes in their original telecast- but now, no copying. I will of course try and maintain the nuances of the character, but I want to do it my way.

Do you know Shilpa? Or do you just know of her?
Well, Shilpa and I have met at a few events and exchanged pleasantries. Nothing more than that.

Bhabi Ji producer told us that you are very cool and sexy...
(Laughs) I'll take that as a compliment. Frankly, I don't do too much of taam-jhaam (fuss) while dressing. More often than not, you will see me in jeans and T-shirt.

TV producers feel that artistes should be in a legal contract with them. What's your take on this?
You are paid a certain good amount if you are under an exclusive contract, so nothing wrong with that.

Have you signed up an exclusive contract for Bhabi Ji...?
Sorry, I can't answer that question.

You have a 10-year old kid at home. Does TV get tough sometimes?

My daughter was 7 months old when I entered the TV industry. Things were not much organised then, so she is used to my long hours of working. Things are much better now, we don't shoot more than 12 hours in a day. Besides, she has grown up now, she is in the fifth standard- and even my mom stays with me. So, I have a good support system.
