Tinaa Dattaa: I always stay away from industry men, I have never had any feelings for them

Tinaa Dattaa, aka Ichcha of TV show Uttaran, is not in a hurry. Exploring exotic locales across the world, doing exciting reality shows in India and Indonesia -- the 24-year-old actress is busy living the life of her dreams. Of course, she is game if someone offers her a meaty project like Uttaran, but she makes it a point to add in the same breath that she will not settle for anything less. In an exclusive chat with SpotboyE.com at her plush Malad flat, Tinaa opens up about life after Uttaran, love, relationships and why live-in is not her cup of tea. Here are the excerpts...
How is life after Uttaran?
I am enjoying my lone time. I have been working for more than 20 years and this is the first time I have taken such a long break.
It’s been more than a year since Uttaran aired its last episode (Jan 16, 2015)...
In between, I did Khatron Ke Khiladi and many regional shows in Indonesia. But yes, if you are talking about a daily soap, I haven’t taken up one yet.
Icchha is immensely popular... So, what’s next?
I played Ichcha for 5 years, so before taking the next step, I need to consider many things. When people are used to seeing you in a particular role, their expectations increase. It’s not that I am not getting roles...I recently got offers for 2 shows from 2 different channels. I liked one role, but am not too happy with the show’s TRP. So, let’s see...
Do you think Ichcha’s popularity will overshadow all the characters you play from now on?

Do you think Ichcha’s popularity will overshadow all the characters you play from now on?
Even now, when I go out, I am addressed as Ichcha. No matter what role I play, even if it’s a prominent one, I think Ichcha’s presence will always be there.
You are on a long break. Don’t you fear fading away from the limelight?
(Long pause) I don’t think so. Kuch na kuch toh hota hi rehta hai. I am also in talks for a Bengali film. It is necessary to take little breaks in between.
You said you were in Indonesia. What did you do there?
Uttaran is the number one show in Indonesia. It is aired for 4 hours daily and people are crazy about it. I was there for 2-3 months. They have a channel ANTV and I was part of all their shows.
Do you remember your early days in Mumbai? Was it tough?
Yes. I was working in Kolkata when I got a call from Balaji (Telefilms). Initially, I did a lot of to and fro, so it was tough handling travel expenses. But slowly and steadily, things improved.
During your struggling days, did anyone ever misbehave with you?
No, and there is a reason for that. I maintain a different aura when I am on the set or interacting with someone. So, people think twice before approaching me. Your personality speaks – it’s all about how you maintain your name and reputation in the market.
So, Tinaa Dattaa never faced casting couch?
(Laughs) No, not at all. Touchwood. I am really lucky I did not have to face that.
Who has been your biggest support?
My parents have stood by me through thick and thin. Generally, daughters are closer to their father, but when you grow up, your mom becomes your best friend. I also have a few close friends.
Do they help you take decisions?
No. Right or wrong, I decide for myself. I believe it is necessary to take wrong decisions, because you’ll get to learn from them and be a responsible person. I have learnt a lot in my life and have become mature beyond my age.
Being a celeb, do you miss enjoying the simple pleasures of life?
I am a simple girl in real life, I don’t live in a bubble. Today I am a star, tomorrow I may not be. Fame and popularity do not stay with you forever.
You are not interested in Bollywood?
Daily soaps are very close to my heart, I would love to do only TV.
Are you in a relationship?
No, I am too focused on my work. Also, I am still looking for my Mr. Right, who in today’s world, does not exist. I haven’t found a man who will understand and respect me and my work. I want someone who will not judge me.

He has to be loyal. I can’t date a boy...I wish to be with a man, who will treat and respect me like a woman. Looks are not my priority, because they can be deceptive. I believe in the institution of marriage, I am against live-in relationships. If I find my man, I would get married and settle down in two years.
You haven’t found anybody in the industry?
I don’t wish to date anybody from the industry, because there are many insecurities. I am practical. If I marry an actor and God forbid, if he doesn’t have a show, no matter how much we love each other, male ego will come in between. I may sound rude or blunt, but that’s the reality. I want a stable and secure relationship.
Not even a fling with a co-actor?
When I started Uttaran, all my male co-stars – Mrunal Jain, Nandish Sandhu, Rohit Khurana, Gaurav Bajaj – were single. But I never had a fling, crush or even infatuation. I always stay away from industry men, I have never had any feelings for them.
Coming back to live-in relationships, they are very casual nowadays...
It is not my cup of tea. You get emotionally attached to one person and one day that person says that it’s not working out – that’s not my way. Our society hasn’t accepted this trend. And since I come from a conservative Bengali family, live-in is out of question.
You had told us Vikas Bhalla is your best friend. (Friendship Day Special: Meet The Besties Of Telly Town, Aug 7) How did he become so close to you?

We were in Uttaran together for around one-and-a-half years. We bonded well and later, when we went to Indonesia, the bond became stronger. In fact, he is a family friend now. His wife loves me a lot. I have met many people who have ‘claimed’ to be my best friends, but they were just friends for the sake of convenience. You get very few friends who are not insecure about you. You really need to be lucky.
How is your equation with Uttaran co-star Rashami Desai?
Rashami is a very good friend. There are rumours about us not being friends, but that’s not true. We do meet up and speak over phone. We share a good bond.
You started off with Bengali shows and films. How has the journey been?
Amazing and tough. I still remember the days when I started shooting for Uttaran. We had a set in Powai, which had become my second home. I used to stay there for 2-3 days at a stretch. I even had a Hindi teacher to get my diction correct, apart from the senior actors (on the show) who helped a lot. Fans just see the glamorous part, but there is a lot of hard work behind being successful.
