Excel Entertainment's Boong wins Best Feature Film and Best Young Talent to Gugun Kipgen at South Asian Film, literary and Cultural festival in Washington DC!
It's a magnificent win for Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures’ Boong at the South Asian Film, Literary and Cultural Festival, as the film won awards for Best Feature Film and Best Young Talent for Gugun Kipgen. Having opened to a phenomenal response upon its theatrical re-release, the film created history by crossing ₹1 crore at the box office, officially becoming the highest-grossing Manipuri film to date. Now, this is yet another amazing win for the film.

Adding to its remarkable journey, Boong also made history on the global stage by becoming the first Indian film to win a BAFTA award, a landmark achievement that brought international recognition to Manipuri cinema. The honour marked a significant moment not only for the film’s makers but also for the Indian film industry, highlighting the richness and diversity of stories emerging from different corners of the country.
Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, kickstarting an impressive festival journey that included screenings at the Warsaw International Film Festival, São Paulo International Film Festival, Adelaide Film Festival and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, among others. Each stop strengthened its reputation as a tender, emotionally resonant narrative rooted in authenticity.
Boong is a Manipuri story about a young boy played by Gugun Kipgen who desires to reunite his broken family. Boong is raised by his single mother Mandakini played by Bala Hijam Ningthoujam, he goes on a poignant quest with his best friend to find his missing father. It touches on significantly important issues of hope, resilience and the bonds of child and mother.
