Amanjot Kaur’s Grandmother Passes Away Days Before India’s Historic Women’s World Cup Win — Family Hid News To Keep Her Focused

When India clinched the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup on November 2 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the moment was historic—and deeply emotional. The team defeated South Africa by a commanding 52 runs to lift the trophy for the first time. Amanjot Kaur played a key role in that victory, most notably with a catch in the final that helped turn the tide.

However, what made her contribution even more remarkable was what she didn’t know at the time: her grandmother, 75-year-old Bhagwanti, had suffered a heart attack and passed away days before the final. The family chose not to inform Amanjot before the match, to ensure she remained fully focused.

In a conversation with the Indian Express, her father explained that Bhagwanti had been Amanjot’s pillar of support from the moment she began playing cricket—whether it was on the streets or in the park near their home in Phase 5, Mohali. While he worked at his carpentry shop in Balongi, Bhagwanti stayed by the field, watching and encouraging Amanjot as she practised with boys and girls alike.

After the game, Amanjot spoke emotionally about the catch and the victory: “We all knew how important the catch was. First time ever in my life, glad that I got that second chance. I don’t have words to express it — we’ve created history.” She also acknowledged her grandmother’s illness, and thanked her teammates, coaches and family—unaware until then of the loss at home.

The family and the Indian women’s cricket setup are undoubtedly in mourning for Bhagwanti, while simultaneously celebrating a richly deserved win. The bittersweet moment underscores not just a sporting triumph, but a personal journey of dedication, love and perseverance.
