Veteran filmmaker Rono Mukherjee passed away on May 28, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 83, following a prolonged battle with age-related health issues. A respected figure in Indian cinema, he was best known for directing films like Haiwan (1977) and Tu Hi Meri Zindagi (1965). Rono was the brother of Shomu Mukherjee (Kajol’s father), Subbir Mukherjee, Joy Mukherjee, and Deb Mukherjee, and the father of actress Sharbani Mukherjee

His funeral took place in Mumbai, drawing several family members and celebrities who came to pay their last respects. Among the attendees were filmmaker Ayan Mukerji, his nephew, and actress Tanishaa Mukerji, Kajol’s sister. Director Ashutosh Gowariker also attended the cremation with his wife. Despite the inclement weather, the family gathered to honor Rono's memory. Notably, actress Kajol was absent from the funeral due to prior commitments related to film promotions.

Rono Mukherjee hailed from the illustrious Mukherjee-Samarth film family, which has significantly influenced Bollywood over the decades. His cousins included Ram Mukherjee (Rani Mukerji’s father), Shyam Mukherjee, Gitanjali Mukherjee, Subhash Mukherjee, and Sanjoy Mukherjee. The family's deep roots in the film industry have made them a prominent name in Indian cinema.

Rono’s passing marks another personal loss for the Mukherjee family in what has been a challenging year. His contributions to the film industry and his role in one of Bollywoo
