The Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has responded to all the criticism that he has been facing surrounding the Dior Sauvage advertisment that he did recently. It was heavily criticised for being offensive to indigenous people. Twitter was abuzz after the ad aired, to criticize it. Soon after, the ad was taken off air on 30th August. Speaking at the Deauville American Film Festival while promoting his upcoming film Waiting For The Barbarians, the actor mentioned that the teaser didn't accurately portray the full depth of the project.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted the actor saying at Deauville Film Festival, "A teaser obviously is a very concentrated version of images and there were objections to the teaser of the small film. The film has never been seen." He also added, “There was never - and how could there be or how would there be -any dishonourable (intent). The film was made with great respect for the indigenous people not just of North America but all over the world,” Johnny Depp also mentioned that it is a pity that people jumped the gun and made these objections.
As of publication, no formal statement has been issued by Dior addressing the backlash against the Sauvage campaign. The clip in question featured Johnny Depp in the desert as Native Americans wearing traditional indigenous dresses performed a war dance. Twittter was flooded with criticism for the ad and one person pointed that “sauvage” is only one letter away from a racial slur.
