Who knew that one day a sacred act of breastfeeding can spark a debate in media? Well, that day is today when a cover of Malayalam Women’s magazine Grihalakshmi evoked praise, outrage and reasoned criticism. Well, as World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of mothers and babies, the Malayam Women's magazine that was released a year back on International Women's Day has become a hot topic of discussion again. Reason being the breastfeeding week.
In the cover photo, the controversial photo features 27-year-old model Gilu Joseph dressed in a grey blouse, breastfeeding a baby while she stares squarely at the camera and on the magazine the headline reads, “Mothers tell Kerala, ‘please don’t stare, we need to breastfeed." However, the thing that supposed to be the world's beautiful act or sacred act was mercilessly criticised by some netizens a year ago and again after a year despite being an old cover magazine.
