If Rajkumar Hirani's stars are in the right place, destiny will reunite the once-upon-a-time lovebirds Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor.
Ji haan! You read it right! Rajkumar Hirani has asked Sonam Kapoor to play Ranbir Kapoor's love interest in his next, which is a biopic on Sanjay Dutt.

If Sonam says yes, and we see no reason why she should say no, we wonder which girlfriend of Sanju has she been asked to essay.
1981-83: Tina Munim?

Dutt and Tina were childhood friends and love eventually blossomed between the two Bollywood actors. Tina gave her career a backseat to pair up with Sanjay in his first film Rocky. Reportedly, she refused several film offers which went on to become big commercial success at the box-office. And then suddenly one day, it was all over. Tina left him for a much older Rajesh Khanna. However, years later Sanju showed up as a guest at her wedding to industrialist Anil Ambani.
1987-96: Richa Sharma?

Sanju fell in love with Richa and married her in '87. They had a daughter together a year later, Trishala. But just two months after Trishala’s birth, Richa was diagnosed with cancer and the couple separated. Richa moved to the US with her daughter to live with her parents while Dutt pursued his career in Bollywood.
1990-1993: Madhuri Dixit?

Sanju's affair with the dhak dhak gal almost headed to the altar. However, by the time their film Khalnayak released and Sanju was arrested in the 1993 blasts case, Madhuri decided to leave him.
1993-2005: Rhea Pillai?

While Madhuri did not make a single trip to see Sanju in jail, Rhea Pillai burst on the scene and was seen attending to Sanju in his dark days. Out from jail, Sanju married Rhea in '98 but the marriage lasted only till 2005.
2006: Nadia Durrani?

It was said that Sanju's fondness for Nadia from Kaante was the reason why Rhea exited from his life. Dutt had started introducing her to his kith and kin as his girlfriend, but it was too good to last.
2007: Manyata?

Sanju met Manyata who harboured aspirations to become a lead actress in Bollywood. When the two tied the knot on February 7, 2008, Manyata had said 'goodbye' to her dream of acting.Today, she she is the mother of his two children (twins)- Shahraan (son) and Iqra (daughter)- and also the CEO of his production house named Sanjay Dutt Productions.
Says a source, "The modalities are fast being worked out with Sonam. So far so good. Let's see what happens."
Rewind. Sonam and Ranbir were alleged to have got up close and personal during the making of their debut ticket to Bollywood, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya. However, they soon drifted apart when Ranbir was drawn towards Deepika Padukone. Sonam and Deepika have had a frosty equation since then.
Things went really bad between the two in 2010 (three years after Saawariya hit theatres) when Ranbir tagged Sonam as 'not sexy' and Sonam retaliated on Karan Johar's chat show by saying that she wouldn't apologise to Ranbir. And then in an interview given to a section of the media in 2011, Sonam said, "Well, it was Ranbir who started it all by saying 'Sonam is not sexy'. I just shot back and said 'Ranbir is not sexy'. If a man says it, chalta hai. But when a woman says the same thing, nahi chalta hai? That's sexist! Why should I say 'sorry' to him? Just because his father (Rishi Kapoor) made a hue and cry about it? If Ranbir apologises to me, I shall too." Unable to keep quiet, Ranbir commented: "She is a bit of a drama queen but I like her." And Sonam retaliated, "I am an actress, darling. If I don't do drama, who else will?"
However in June 2013, at a party hosted by Arjun Kapoor, they let bygones be bygones and patched up.
For those who've come in late, Ranbir's friend Vicky Singh (director of Roy) wanted to cast Sonam and Ranbir together in his directorial debut. This was soon after Saawariya hit theatres, but Vicky's film did not materialise.
Hirani has been tight-lipped about the biopic casting so far, and Sonam was also in no mood to confirm anything about the offer when we texted her.
The film in question goes on floors in January. Hirani has directed Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, 3 Idiots and PK till date, and all four have set the cash registers ringing very loudly.
