BEST DRESSED & WORST DRESSED AT IIFA AWARDS 2017: Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha, Mira Rajput Or Nargis Fakhri?

With a few inspired choices, a couple of disasters and a whole lot of shimmer, the green carpet at the 18th IIFA Awards in New York was a delight to watch

BEST DRESSED & WORST DRESSED AT IIFA AWARDS 2017: Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha, Mira Rajput Or Nargis Fakhri?
Let’s start with the early bird who did not get the worm.

Sonakshi Sinha was among the first to arrive on the green carpet at the 18th IIFA Awards. Her ensemble looked like it was thrown together at the last minute. The white bustier, the multi-coloured drape, the desi jewellery- all the disparate elements came together to create a sartorial tragedy. Sonakshi seemed to know that she will make it to all the Worst Dressed lists with the outfit.

So a couple of hours later, she changed into a sequinned red number. If Sonakshi was aiming for glamour with the ruffled shoulders, sheer sleeves and sheer train, she failed miserably. She tried too hard and that is never a good thing.

Sequins were the ‘In’ thing on the IIFA green carpet and no one could top this bling-tastic number worn by Alia Bhatt. She made a late appearance after opening the awards nite with a smashing performance. The beautiful gown which featured a full skirt of black tulle covered with bursts of silver sparkle, and a beaded bust was a beautiful sight to behold.  In our opinion, this is one of Alia’s best fashion moments.

Kriti Sanon sported this sleek, pearlescent gown for the big night. Now Kriti is a beautiful, statuesque girl who would look great even in a bin bag. But on a red carpet full of shiny, shiny gowns, this one failed to stand out.

Now, let’s take a look at how Katrina Kaif fared. The actress did not walk the green carpet as she was prepping for her performance.  It was when she finally walked on stage to hand over the Best Actor trophy to Shahid Kapoor that we got a glimpse of this blue creation. It did remind us of Aishwarya Rai’s gargantuan Cannes number of the same colour but that is not a critique. Katrina looked good.

This is Diljit Dosanjh’s first IIFA weekend and kudos to the Punjabi star for not taking the boring tuxedo route. But why not wear something which fits? The boxy double-breasted jacket and the baggy tee ruined what could have been a rather dapper look.

Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover win the prize for the Worst Dressed Couple. The heavy-handed make-up, the atrocious gown and then the faux-military outfit of Karan, this one is an eyesore.

After that mess, this next entry is a refreshing palate cleanser. Mira Rajput was a tangerine dream in this pleated, belted number. Shahid Kapoor’s wife usually opts for elaborate, traditional outfits but she stood out in this simple-yet-sophisticated gown. The outfit was unconventional in its simplicity and the colour cinched this win for Mira.

Kalki Koechlin is known to push the envelope when it comes to her fashion choices. This is a clear case of an experiment gone wrong. Kalki seems to be drowning in a sea of pink ruffles and the sad part is, there is nothing avant-garde about this look.

Disha Patani has stuck to a theme for the IIFA weekend. It’s been shimmer, shimmer and some more shimmer. And she pulled out the big guns for the finale. Taapsee Pannu take note, this is how you pull off a mixture of sheer and shine. Disha looks hot in this number.

Nargis Fakhri has put on a few pounds since we last saw the Rockstar actress. But this bold, burgundy gown accentuates her curves well.  Her hair and make-up is rather basic for such a big event but we are guessing she did not want to take the attention away from the star of the show, the décolletage.

Shilpa Shetty breaks the ‘cleavage or legs’ rule with élan. This gauzy, metallic number trumped the other bold gowns on the green carpet. Shilpa Shetty’s famous figure does justice to this gown which is a lesson in sexy elegance. Shilpa’s hubby Raj Kundra picked a tuxedo to play arm candy to his wife and they looked good.

Abhay Deol went the flamboyant route and emerged a winner. The combination of floral shirt, purple suit and coloured glasses could have gone horribly wrong. But instead, Abhay Deol was one of the best dressed men on the IIFA green carpet.

To end this red carpet round-up, let’s take a look at the person who made one of the boldest sartorial choices of the evening. We are talking about Jim Sarbh. Bollywood’s other famous dandy Ranveer Singh skipped IIFA this year, but Jim seemed to be channelling the Bajirao Mastani star in this printed suit. We will give this a gold star for effort.
