Archana Puran Singh Opens Up On Getting Stereotyped For Comic Roles ‘I Feel Deprived, Cheated And I Have Been Left Yearning For Good Roles’
Archana Puran Singh has featured in many Bollywood films as well as television shows. She is a known personality in the industry. She became a household name after her association with Comedy Circus. She has judged seasons of the Comedy Circus and since 2019 she is seen in The Kapil Sharma Show. She has become synonymous with comedy. Though the senior actress has garnered adulation for comedy, in a recent interview she has shown her resentment of not getting to play ‘serious roles’ other than comic characters.

In an interaction with Indian Express, Archana Puran Singh mentioned that she is stereotyped as playing only comedy roles. She was quoted saying, “That chhaap (image) is so solid. Also, a lot of people feel that what should they offer me after Ms. Briganza. It’s been almost 25 years since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was released. And the character is still following me. People also feel that I am best suited only for comedy. As an actor, I feel deprived, cheated and I have been left yearning for good roles.”

She continued that in Hollywood they consider it to be lucky to get to play the same roles, but I feel playing the same roles is a ‘death of an actor’. She asserted, “They say if you keep getting the same roles, it means you are very lucky, that people want to keep watching you. However, I feel it’s the death of an actor. I remember Neena Gupta had once posted on social media seeking work, I guess I will take this opportunity to ask for work from directors and producers.”

The 60-year-old actress told that she wants to act and perform serious characters on screen. She is craving to do a serious role other than comedy. She said, “As an artist, I am dying to perform. People have seen just one aspect of my craft. I also have a serious side. I can do so much more than just comedy. Main ro bhi sakti hu, rula bhi sakti ho (I can cry and make people cry too). That side of me is yet to be explored but I am sure it will happen one day.”

Meanwhile, Singh has had a successful career in Bollywood films like Jalwa, Raja Hindustani, Mohabbatein, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai among many others. She had appeared in television serials like Shrimaan Shrimati, Jaane Bhi Do Paaro, Junoon, and more.
