Marathi Film Producer Atul Tapkir Commits Suicide After Posting Facebook Message

Marathi film producer Atul Tapkir has been found dead in a hotel room in Pune. He posted a message on Facebook, written in Marathi, before ending his life on Sunday.

In the post, he cites financial loss in filmmaking and marital dispute as reasons for taking the drastic step.

Tapkir had produced a Marathi movie, Dhol Taashe , which released in 2015. The film tanked at the box-office despite positive reviews. In the Facebook post, Tapkir stated that the losses incurred by him damaged his life.

Atul Tapkir was staying away from his family for the past six months. The producer was staying in a hotel, located on busy Karve road. The hotel staff called the police after he did not open the door this morning.

Police broke down the door to find his found lying on the bed. Preliminary investigation indicates that Tapkir committed suicide by consuming poison. His body has been sent for post-mortem to Sassoon General Hospital.

In his last Facebook post, he mentioned that he was depressed because of financial loss and strained relationship with his wife after producing the film. He alleged that his wife and brothers-in-law were torturing him after he suffered the financial loss. He had a quarrel with his wife a few days back over phone when he was drunk, Tapkir wrote on Facebook.

“My mind is asking me to end my life, that's why I am drinking the poison...I apologise to my family friends and son. Sorry for all the troubles you had to bear because of me. Sorry I am leaving you all midway but I am yours. One thing I am happy about is that I'll live with my mom now,” he stated in the Facebook post.

Despite the apparent suicide, Deccan Gymkhana police have recorded accidental death for now. Police says that the investigation will proceed after receipt of the postmortem report.
