Movie Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows is a good ride gone bad

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows, a sequel to the mildly entertaining Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012), will shock fans – both casual as well as hard-core ones.

It is mind-boggling that a funny cartoon series from the ‘90s cannot be made into an entertainer on the big screen – even with names like Michael Bay, Megan Fox and Stephen Amell attached to it.

This time around, the superheroes find out that their arch-enemy Shredder has broken out of jail. So, they take out their garbage truck/battle vehicle to attack the baddies and almost succeed – until Shredder disappears into thin air.

Till here, the film is entertaining. But the moment Shredder disappears into thin air, so does the entertainment value of the film.

The film is not an absolute disaster, though. The look, feel and direction will remind you of one of those
Sunday cartoons -- stuff that is momentarily entertaining, but forgettable otherwise.

The camera work, the dialogues and particularly Stephen Amell’s performance as Casey Jones, look right out of a forgotten ‘90s studio box. Audiences will be shocked to see him as a slightly unhinged, loud character.

There’s so much happening in the film that apart from the 4 central characters -- Raphael, played by Alan Ritchson, Donatello, played by Jeremy Howard, Michelangelo, played by Noel Fisher and Leonardo, played by Pete Ploszek -- nobody has breathing space.

Megan Fox’s April O’Neil has a major role, but her three-expression performance fails to impress. In fact, the knotted t-shirt that she sports has more performance to offer than the actress herself.

Director Dave Green brings out the camp factor of the original cartoon series, but keeps the overall look dark and violent.

This one is strictly for those who are fans of the franchise and want to see what’s going on with their favourites.
