Movie Review: The Nice Guys is an entertaining ode to the ‘70s

Shane Black’s The Nice Guys had created quite a stir when its cast -- Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling -- was announced. That the film was set in the sinful ‘70s made it all the more interesting.  Does the film live up to its expectations? Read on...

Private Eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and local enforcer Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) make for an unusual pair. The film has a wacky storyline, which is a perfect recipe for some laughter and great action.

Black succeeds in creating a ‘70s that most of the audience must only have heard about – a world where people could be shot just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. A world that’s slowly waking up to fast cars, beautiful women and people who believe in grabbing an opportunity by the neck – even if it isn’t actually for them.

The script captures the audience’s attention, but the characters are the shining stars of the film. It is commendable how well every character has been etched, even the ones with bit roles.

However, there is one compartment where the film is weak -- the bonhomie between the central characters, Jackson and March is not convincing enough. The 2 endear themselves to the audience, but only fleetingly.

On the performances front, the film belongs to Angourie Rice, who plays Holly, March’s 13-year-old daughter. In a film filled with wacky characters, it is a marvel that this 15-year-old Australian actress steals the limelight.

The father-daughter chemistry between Ryan and Angourie also grabs the audience’s attention.

Crowe, needless to say, adds his unique spin to the film.

The Nice Guys is an unapologetic pulp film that strives only to entertain. It is something you should watch over your favourite drink. .We're lining up for a sequel if there's one.
