Deepa Mehta’s 'Funny Boy' Won't Be Available On Netflix India- EXCLUSIVE

Deepa Mehta’s latest work being hailed everywhere for its luminous lyricism was released by Netflix on December 10. But Indians in India haven’t got to see it as yet, and in all probability they won’t get to see it in the near future. Funny Boy stars Brandon Ingram, Nimmi Harasgama, Ali Kazmi, Agam Darshi and Arush Nand, and it is based on Shyam Selvadurai’s best-selling novel by the same name. The film revolves around a young Tamil boy, who is coming to terms with his sexuality amid the Tamil-Sinhalese civil war in Sri Lanka during the 1970s and 1980s.
The Canadian drama film will not be available to stream on Netflix in India. The real reason behind the film being unavailable in India is that Funny Boy is licensed to Netflix only in a couple of countries, and it’s not available in the vast majority of countries, including India. Since Netflix does not have the license to showcase the movie in India as of now, it will be unavailable for Netflix India users.
In other news, Funny Boy was Canada’s official entry for the 93rd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. However, it was then rejected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science (AMPAS) since the film contained too many English dialogues.
Deadline reported that while the film is in Tamil and Sinhalese, it also contains English dialogues. As per the Academy, a feature film can't contain over 50 per cent English dialogues to be eligible in the Best International Film category.
