Renowned for portraying antagonist roles in films such as Jawaan and Master, actor Vijay Setupathi is a notable personality from South India also known for his cop role in Shahid Kapoor's Farzi. Currently, he is dedicated to promoting his forthcoming movie, Merry Christmas, featuring Bollywood star Katrina Kaif in the lead role. In a recent press conference held in Chennai, the Vikram actor became visibly agitated when a reporter questioned his stance on the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, particularly regarding the imposition of the Hindi language in the state. Sethupathi intervened and expressed in Tamil, "Hindi as a language was never opposed." When the reporter queried whether Hindi should be embraced, Vijay vehemently criticized the repeated nature of such questions. He recalled similar inquiries during Aamir Khan's visit and questioned the necessity of asking the same thing persistently. Asserting his viewpoint, he emphasized that while there was no restriction on studying Hindi, the issue was about not enforcing it. During a Merry Christmas cast gathering featuring Kartina and Vijay, they also tackled the ongoing discussions about the distinctions between North and South Indian cinema. Vijay emphasized, "At the teaser launch, I was questioned about the divide between these film industries. Someone mentioned that with the advent of OTT platforms, the barrier began to collapse, and it's evident now."




Directed by Sriram Raghavan, "Merry Christmas" faced multiple postponements before its upcoming release scheduled for January 12, 2024. Initially anticipated to debut on December 8, 2023, the movie's release date was adjusted due to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s "Animal," featuring Ranbir Kapoor, hitting the screens around the same time.
