Yes, this is true. Dr Hathi had almost died 8 years back--- but a quirk of fate landed him at the doorstep of a man who acted fast and took several risks to save him...
"That's right. Kavi Kumar Azaad (Dr Hathi of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah) was almost dead about 8 years ago. He was brought in that state to me. He had collapsed on the sets," Dr Muffi Lakdawala, India's leading Bariatric Surgeon confirms to SpotboyE.com.
So, what was the problem, we asked? Dr Lakdawala replied, "Well, he weighed 265 kg then. And obviously with that weight, you cannot go on."

Dr Hathi (45) died on Monday after a massive cardiac arrest, leaving the TV industry and his fans in a pall of gloom. He was cremated yesterday afternoon. Since then, his co-actors especially Bhide (Mandar Chandwadkar), Jethalal (Dilip Joshi) and the Tappu Sena has been in a state of shock.
Back to the surgery. Dr Hathi was immediately put on the ventilator and after a period of time, was wheeled into the Operation Theatre for a bariatric surgery.
