Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar starrer, Saand Ki Aankh did not just launch its trailer, a few days back, but also a big debate on social media. Kangana Ranaut’s sister, Rangoli’s tweet questioning the acting skills of the actresses (Taapsee and Bhumi) to portray an elderly woman’s role, and revealing that the movie was first offered to Kangana and she had suggested Neena Gupta and Ramya Krishnan’s name for it, instigated the Badhaai Ho actress to also comment on it and say, “Yes, I was just thinking about this hamari umar ke role toe kamsekam hamse karalo bhai."

We spoke to him this morning to find out what he thinks about the ageism debate.

“My favourite film is Mother India and through Saand Ki Aankh, I have tried to pay homage to Nargis ji, as she was also quite young at the time when she played the role,” said Tushar instantly, also questioning why bring out this topic at all when we have had brilliant actresses do the same in the past.
Tushar recalled how wonderfully Meena Kumari played a role much older to her in Mere Apne. And we think it's just fair, after all, who can forget Suchitra Sen- Sanjeev Kumar in Aandhi and Sharmila Tagore in Mausam?

The Saand Ki Aankh director further added that had it been male actors instead of Taapsee and Bhumi who had done the same in his upcoming movie, they would have been applauded for their efforts. “Yahi agar koi hero karta, toh sab very good bolte,” Tushar quipped. Well, at this point we couldn’t resist thinking about Anupam Kher in Saaransh, Sanjeev Kumar in Sholay and if you Google further, it will present a long list for you.
Tushar also reasoned out casting Taapsee and Bhumi for the respective roles. “Saand Ki Aankh is not restricted to just one phase. It’s a complete journey of Prakashi and Chand. The story keeps visiting their younger days too. And that’s the reason I cast Taapsee and Bhumi, who mind you, were the only ones ready to take up the challenge of playing someone ahead of their age. In fact, very soon you will see a song of them in their younger days. They have done a superb job, and people will realise it after watching the film,” he said confidently.

When we discussed with Tushar how Rangoli Chandel (Kangana Ranaut's sister) and Neena Gupta sparked off the entire ageism controversy and if he would like to comment on that, the director refused and said that he's just happy that his film’s trailer has got positive response. He told us, “My film is ready and I am happy with it. I am just looking at the positive side and not bothered about these controversies; I have got a great response for the trailer, mujhe aur kisi cheez mein ghusna nahi hai.” However, he quickly added in the same breath, “Neena ji ko toh National Award mila hi hai abhi (Best Supporting Actress, Badhaai Ho). Aur sabko kaam milta hai. If you deserve work, you will get it.”
Interestingly, when we contacted Neena Gupta before going online, to understand what made her comment something like that, the actress vehemently refused to express or justify her opinion and said she has said what she wanted to, and doesn’t want to talk further about it. We clearly didn’t understand her being mum about it now, especially at a stage where the actress herself has accepted in an elaborate interview with Rajeev Masand that she is getting fabulous roles now and doors are being finally opened to the likes of her (read Veere Di Wedding, Badhaai Ho, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan as far as Neena Gupta is concerned) - we specifically told her this, but Neena just reiterated her stance. Strange. Very Strange.
