MOVIE REVIEW: Central Intelligence lacks entertainment value

Central Intelligence promised it all. A crackling comedy between Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kevin Hart, combustible action from The Rock and a summer entertainer to anyone who would make their way to the theatres. Does it fulfil any of these promises? Let’s find out.

Kevin Hart plays Calvin Joyner, a jaded accountant who used to be an ultra-popular guy in high school but couldn’t make much of his life post that. His life spirals downwards when his junior at work gets a promotion and his wife, Maggie (Danielle Nicolet) starts wondering whether there is strife in their marital life.

Into the mix comes Bob Stone (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson), whose only interaction with Calvin was when the former was buck naked in a basketball court in high school.

It’s not what one would think though. Calvin was winning an award – one of his many – at the school and Bob, then known as Robbie Weirdicht, was the victim of the latest instance of high school bullying.

But that moment bonded the two and years later, Calvin gets a friend request from Bob. Calvin decides to meet him and that’s when the adventure really begins.

Calvin now doesn’t just have to worry about his professional and personal life crumbling to bits, but also about being entangled with the bad guys, government authorities and a rogue agent – everything that makes for an action fest.

Unfortunately, Central Intelligence doesn’t live up to the premise that it built up. With one of the best action heroes and a great stand-up comedy performer, much was expected from CI but little is actually given.

The film slumps right after the beginning because of a storyline that’s complicated for no reason. What could be a straightforward story told in a fun manner becomes a convoluted plot.

Several aspects the film handles – like bullying, success being fickle and what not - are lost in the complicated plot.

Central Intelligence is an extremely self-aware film, what with the jibes about Rock’s fanny pack and the dialogue about nicknames being dumb and all that, but it all falls flat because of a weak screenplay.

Director Rawson Marshall Thurber is taken up by the idea that camera angles showing The Rock and Kevin in the same screen bickering and talking will be the epic points of the film. They aren’t, instead they create the idea that the director just can’t go out of the ‘Oh-God-I-am-directing-The-Rock’ zone.

Speaking of The Rock, this is a guy who plays all of his roles with such earnestness and dedication that it makes the audience root for him. He and Kevin are the only positive aspects of the film. The Gawd-awesome performers like Aaron Paul and Jason Bateman are criminally wasted in bit roles.

This is a project engineered to self-destruct. Sorry, guys.
