Movie Review: Pete’s Dragon Is Old-School Disney In A New, Entertaining Avatar

The live-action animated Pete’s Dragon hits theatres today. This film is another addition in Disney’s plan of reviving and remaking their classics. The original released in 1977. So what does the new version offer?
Pete (Oakes Fegley), a young boy, is lost in the forest after he and his parents meet with an accident. Pete meets a dragon, whom he names Elliot. 6 years down the line, he is found by Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), a forest ranger. Grace is in a relationship with Jack (Wes Bentley) who is a lumberjack working for a logging company. Jack’s brother, Gavin (Karl Urban) suspects there is a dragon in the forest and goes hunting, while Grace brings Pete home. What happens next forms the rest of the movie.

Pete’s Dragon is a typical Disney film – which is good news. The characters are sugary with just a hint of salt, there’s a story that’s high on subtle messages as well as emotions and there’s also place for humour. Director David Lowery has done a good job of bringing this timeless story to the screen.
There are good performances in here and several aspects take Pete’s Dragon to a higher level. One, the fact that the non-human characters don’t talk – making the film much more realistic. The other aspect that’s a treat is the addition of some great Country songs, which add a zest to the screenplay that’s otherwise slightly lagging. The high point that the film reaches with the climax makes Pete’s Dragon an enjoyable fare.

Once again, Disney has succeeded in creating a great animated character, Elliot the Dragon. The nuances and the emotions that the character portrays make it feel all so real. This is classic Disney at work. A perfect fare for anyone who has been touched by the Disney magic and wishes to experience it again.
