Hina Khan’s EXIT Throws Yeh Rishta... Out Of Top 10

Your weekly dope on your ongoing TV shows. While Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai disappoints, Naagin 2 re-attains the top spot

Hina Khan sent fans into a tizzy when, in November last year, she revealed that she is quitting the much-popular Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai which airs on Star Plus. Such was the impact of her decision that some fans threatened to kill themselves (Hina Khan: Fans have threatened to kill themselves if I quit Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Nov 25). Now, looks like the show continues to deal with the consequences of Hina’s exit. For, in Week 52 (December 23-29) Yeh Rishta...failed to feature in the top 10 shows. You may recall that ever since her exit, the show has witnessed a gradual decrease in its ratings (Hina Khan’s Exit Weakens Yeh Rishta..., Ekta’s Naagin 2 Is Still No.1, Dec 15). It will be a while before the makers and the audience recover from the huge loss.

Further, as expected, Ekta Kapoor’s Naagin 2 (Colors) regained the top slot in the said week, but her other show Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (Star Plus) featuring Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel dropped two positions. It was at No. 7 in Week 51 (December 16-22) and stood at No.9 in Week 52. Has the track plateaued?

However, knowing Ekta’s calibre and her knack of infusing spice into shows through interesting twists and turns, we wouldn’t be surprised if it manages to recover next week.

Meanwhile, Colors’ Shakti- Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki climbed the ladder and acquired the No.2 position. It was the 5th most-watched show last time. Zee TV show Kumkum Bhagya and Sony’s The Kapil Sharma Show retained their respective positions – No 3 and 4 respectively.

Another Colors show that performed well in Week 52 is Udaan starring Meera Deosthale (Chakor) and Vijayendra Kumeria (Suraj). It rose from No.8 to 5.

Singing reality show Indian Idol 9, which premiered on December 24 found a spot in the top 10 and acquired the 8th place. Judges Anu Malik, Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan, along with a talented bunch of contestants are sure to make this season of the popular franchise a hit yet again.

Making a surprise entry into the top 10 is Colors’ Sasural Simar Ka. The show, which hasn’t created buzz for a while now got back in the game in Week 52 and was at No.6. We think the drama around Anjali getting blackmailed did the trick for the show.
